Based on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, Dead Ringers tells the story of two identical twin gynecologists - slave Elliot and sensitive Beverly, two bipolar sides of the same personality - who share the same practice, the same apartment and same women. It's a chilling tale, but one that marks a high point in the shared filmography of Cronenberg and Shore.

Shore's score creates an atmosphere that is both beautiful and mysterious. However, Shore uses the beauty of a string orchestra to represent the sinister. Howard Shore said that "Dead Ringers' music works all around the edges. It's all about subtext". Shore won the Genie Award for the score of Dead Ringers.
