Genesis gives players a glimpse into the world of Darksiders even before the events of the original game, and introduces the Horseman of the Apocalypse Strife.
Since ancient times, the Council has maintained the balance of reality. The Riders are its armed arms: they are Nephilim (powerful creatures born from the unnatural union between angels and demons) who have sworn allegiance to the Council and have been endowed with immeasurable powers.
However, their story is tragic: the Riders were ordered to use this power to eradicate their own species. There followed a bloody battle on Eden during which the Riders, obeying the will of the Council, massacred the Nephilim. Still in shock from the events of Eden, War and Strife are entrusted with a new mission: Lucifer, mysterious demon king, prepares to upset the balance by bestowing powers on the demon masters of Hell. War and Strife must track down these demons, gather information and unravel the web of a demonic conspiracy that threatens to irreparably disrupt the balance and the very fabric of creation.
